Fish Wrap - Step by Step
Jul 18th, 2004, 1:53pm

Here are the steps I took in doing a fish wrap.

I used VisualWRAP to help choose the colours, size the pattern and establish the layout thread positions.

The quality of the photos isn't fantastic, but hopefully they are clear enough to let you see what is going on.

STEP 1 - Size the pattern and mark the rod
The pattern to be wrapped was printed out, true-to size.  It was then held against the rod to confirm the number of patten repeats suited the size of the rod.

Printed image

When I was satisfied with how the pattern was going to look, an image of just the layout threads was printed, again true-to-size.  This image was then held against the rod and the appropriate crossing points were marked on each axis.

A small, dark diamond was wrapped to form the centre of the eye.

The outer eye was wrapped using a holographic tape.

Fish Wrap - Step 4: Body

The two-tone body was started, using bands of thread so as to achieve a zig zag or saw-edge effect where the two colours met.

Fish Wrap - Step 5: Tail

Once the body was finished, the tail was started.  Initially there is a gap between the tail and the body.  The blue in the picture is the background thread and the tail is in red.  The background is wrapped down the rod (to the left in this picture) and the tail is wrapped up (to the right in the pic).  The tail was wrapped +1 so as to make it curve.

Fish Wrap - Step 6: Finish Tail

The tail finishes curving once the original gap between the body and the tail is filled.

Fish Wrap - Step 7: Fins

The fins were now wrapped adjacent to the eye.  I wanted the fins to extend further out than the tail, so made sure some background (blue) threads were wrapped past the tail before the fins were started.

Fish Wrap - Step 8: Fill in Background

The background was then wrapped until it closed.

The image below shows the wrap after CP was applied, that's why it looks darker.  When the CP went on, the metallic outer eye buckled a little  Cry  For some reason the tension on the metallic was different to the tension on the other threads.

Good job Dave. Nice wrap, perfect match.

Regarding the tension on the tape. This is common, not only with teh tape, but as well as with metallics, and even regular threads. I'll offer my opinion, I'm not 100% sure if it's true, but it makes sense to me.

When you wrap threads over, the tension "bites" into teh previous threads. I guess when you pack, wrap over, etc, the first threads you laid down tend to lose the tension, and tehy do slide around a bit.

The CP causes teh threads to "blow up" a bit, which means it soaks into the threads, and if the tension is too loose they move. What I do is just wrap everything with a lot of tension. This seems to reduce blowing up for me.

Another reason for threads to blow up, is the whole patterns slipping. When I do the tie offs, I dread hearing teh creaking of teh pattern slipping. This happpend to me pretty bad on my Tuna wrap, I think because it was elongated so much (2x's square)

Anyhow, nice wrap, look foward to more in the future. What blank is that?

I think the blank was a SnyderGlas MT something.  It is an inexpensive blank with a nice soft action.

John - you made a backwards tail, then too small or too big of a tail? My first fish wrap was like that Made the tail backwards, then WAY too big. THen had the bottom of the wrap close up, and ended up "losing" 1/2" of the wrap becasue I botched TOS. VW spacing has taen care ofthat ever happening again, thankfully.
