Thread Art & Rod Building Discussion - proper way to apply color preserver

I use madeira threads exclusivly and when I apply color preserver to them I put a very light coat on them, then wick it off with a clean brush and water. I do this for two coats, it seems to work best and i haven't had any problems with color showing through and epoxy not sticking. When you apply your cp you need to make sure your not globbing it on to try and coat the threads in one coat. When you apply you should only be able to tell that the threads look damp not white from excesive cp. too much color preserver with these threads and it creates a barrier so the epoxy wont stick and not enough the treads will turn a completely diferent color......ITS A TRICKY GAME....but you'll get it. If you have a spare rod or a piece of 1/2" pvc make a couple wraps and test some stradegies out. I use flex coat color preserver if it helps.

Thread Art & Rod Building Discussion - How best to transfer layout centers on rod?

wiltz,
I suggest taking some pieces of white thread( however many axis's you'll be wrapping on) and laying out your crossover point directly on the tread using a fine tip sharpie. then take the thread and tape it to the corrosponding axis's on the blank. this will ensure that your sharpie will not smear off when you wrap your pattern thread over the layout points. When you get 4 or 5 thread down on the rod simply cut the white thread with your layout points on it and pull out from underneath the pattern thread or if the pattern is a closed wrap you can simply leave it there.

Elongated and compressed pattrns don't "work" with VW spacing charts unless you trick VW. What you need to do is set VW to wrap 8 repeats of your pattern. GO into the taper view and enter the specs of your blank. VW will determine the length of the wrap automatically for you - you MUST remember the length the program generates at this point. Wrap the pattern in VW, and counthow many patterns appear in the screen - in this case it will be 4.Now go to the top and change number of repeats to 4, go down into Taper and change the PRINT number for the length auto generated by VW... and press the spacing button. DONOT PRESS ANY OTHER BUTTON after changing the length, just hit spacing. YOuwill have your elongated spacing on both axis and it will be perfect 100% of the time.

I stretch out a majority of the patterns I wrap using this method

Hi,
They are two totally separate packages, for two different applications.

VisualWRAP is for decorative cross wraps (butt wraps). Cross Wrap patterns are typically symetrical and are formed by spiralling threads up and down the blank in a certain sequence. VisualWRAP lets you see the pattern develop as the sequence progresses.

VisualWEAVE is for weaving. Patterns are woven onto your rod by laying coloured pattern threads along the length of the blank, then wrapping a background thread across the blank, and on every pass of the background thread you move pattern threads so that they sit either above or below the wrapping thread, thereby forming the pattern. Using vizWeave you can create any sort of image imaginable. The software lets you import any image file and then gives you tools to assist in creating a left list and grid pattern.

Neither of the packages will teach you how to do the threadwork, they are tools for developing patterns (and understanding pattern formation in the case of vizWrap). To learn the "how to" of thread art you may consider the books "Decorative Wraps" by Billy Vivona for cross wraps, and "A Guide to Thread Weaving for the Custom Rod Builder" by Jim Upton for weaving.

I started a website in 2008 called The Rod Builders Library. It's a place for rod builders to share or download tutorials on a variety of rod building subjects and it's all free.

www.rodbuildingtutorials.com
